Push button orgasms (A Procrastination Post)

I read about this in the 'Metro' about a year ago I think but Nina's mention of robots in the comment box below made me think of it again.

An implant for women that can induce an orgasm!! Well, my first thought on this was 'Gimmie gimmie gimmie now gimmie!' The idea of spicing up a particularly boring lecture on Kant by pressing a button seemed like an ingenious idea; "What's that? Catagorical Imperat..... WOOOOOOO!"

Then I thought about it more and much of the fun of an orgasm is the process leading up to an orgasm. The process is removed if I can walk around Tescos hopping from one foot to the other or collapsing in the deli. There's not much that's erotic about that (unless you have a Supermarket Fetish). It seems intensely sterile and while it might be useful for a woman who can't actually achieve an orgasm it would still take all the excitement and anticipation away from the event; "Alright darlin (gruff masculine voice), 10 seconds to blast off!! 10.... 9...". And inevitably, however much I tried to prevent myself from using it, I'd be pressing the button every 10 minutes or so, particularly at moments when I was engaged in something serious so I could have a good chuckle. Can we become desensitized to an orgasm? The thought fills me with dread.

Worse than that is the matter of body invasive technologies. I don't like the idea of someone implanting a chip inside me, am I still a human if one of the essential things that make's me human is controlled by a chip? Orgasms are very human, animals may have them but for animals they're simply a bi-product of mating. We actively go seeking them, they are bound up in eroticism and/or intimacy, an implant removes the need for that, removes the need for human interaction. If interaction with an other is removed and one of our processes becomes strictly autonomous then we lose a little piece of humanity.

It's not really surprising that it was developed in America (where apparently the trails were a success) and pleasing to see that there were no volunteers for the trial in the UK. Its good to know that we remain women for now instead of cyborg orgasm monsters.
