the 'She'

I find it strangely funny how a lot of people will refer to God as 'She.' I think that frequently the person using the 'She' is an atheist, or perhaps agnostic, and has decided to simply change the notion of God from 'He' to 'She.' This seems pretty harmless, but I find it problematic because the idea of God is a male creation, simply making 'He' a 'She' doesn't make 'He' suddenly a female creation. You can't possibly go back in time and change who created the notion. Why change the gender of God when the concept is still pretty much the same. Make your own, call her 'She' and if she is a 'She' I can't imagine 'Her' being anything like a 'He.' For one thing a 'She' probably wouldn't belong to a monotheistic religion, since monotheism, and its structures, are inherently male. A 'She' would belong to pantheism, probably alongside some 'He's. If I think of a 'She' I think of pagan religions, or the classical Greek pantheon, the Earth Mother, Artemis, Athena, Diana etc etc. If the God of the Christian Church were a 'She,' and if that 'She' were real, then the world would be a completely different place from what it is now.

So don't make 'Him' into a 'Her,' it's only ever a change at face value, and really... if the Christian God were a 'Her' then I think I'd rather be male.
