Pop Philosophy Reading The Guardian's TV supplement this week I came across an article that applies philosophy to various TV programs. I though I'd write them down since these TV Guides always get chucked in the bin, unsurprising of course since they're usually full of shite. On the Simpsons: What it's really about: The nature of happiness, whether hypocrisy is always unethical and Nietzsche's rejection of traditional morality. Most Staggering insight: Maggie's perennial silence isn't just down to the fact that she's a baby: it's a reflection of Heideggerian theory and a warning that the west must be more tolerant of others, otherwise "more people like Maggie Simpson will feel left out of society and turn to more destuctive means of communication". I don't know what to think of this. At one point I think, 'Poor Heidegger,' and then when I watch Maggie on the Simpsons I sometimes think 'That truly is Gelassenheit.' |
